Education

Kidneys

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, located just below the rib cage on each side of the spine, and are responsible for maintaining normal fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. Kidneys are essential to good health because they maintain stable composition of the blood by filtering the blood of waste products which keeps the entire body functioning.

The most common causes of kidney failure (also commonly referred to as renal failure) are diabetes and high blood pressure. This is why diet, exercise, and stress management are crucial to keep your kidneys in a healthy, functioning state. Other kidney disorders include electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders, kidney stones, glomerular disease, tubulointerstitial disease, mineral metabolism, and acute and chronic kidney disease.
